What you should know
After the death of a parent, children are entitled to an orphan's pension – generally until their 18th birthday. If they are then in school or vocational training, the orphan's pension can continue to be paid until their 27th birthday at the latest.
The orphan's pension follows the same rule: an application within six months of the date of death secures payment from the date of death.

The documents you need
Please bring the following documents, if you have them. If something is missing, we will find a solution together.
- The parent's death certificate
- The child's birth certificate
- Proof of custody (if required)
- Confirmation of school, apprenticeship or university enrolment (from age 18)
- Bank details (IBAN)
Good to know
- For students, the PVA regularly checks academic progress – submit proof on time.
- From age 18, the child's own income can affect entitlement.

How long will my child receive an orphan's pension?
Generally until their 18th birthday. In school or vocational training also beyond that, until their 27th birthday at the latest.
Who applies for minor children?
The application is made by the person with custody – usually the surviving parent. We help with filling it in.
Do I have to submit proof on an ongoing basis?
Yes, from the 18th birthday the PVA regularly asks for confirmation of education or training. We are happy to remind you and help you submit it.
