What you should know

Family members without their own health insurance can be co-insured through an insured person – for example children, spouses, registered partners and, under certain conditions, other people too.

Children are generally co-insured until their 18th birthday, and for longer if they are in education or training. For partners, co-insurance is either free of charge or involves an additional contribution, depending on the situation.

How we help you

  • Clarifying who can be co-insured
  • Filling in the application for entitlement (Anspruchsberechtigung)
  • Proof in case of education, caregiving or child-raising
  • Applications for exemption from the additional contribution
  • Help with e-card questions

The documents you need

Please bring the following documents, if you have them. If something is missing, we will find a solution together.

  • Social security numbers of both persons
  • Marriage or birth certificate
  • Registration certificate (Meldezettel)
  • School or university certificate (for children over 18)
  • Proof of income (for exemption from the additional contribution)

Good to know

  • After birth, the child is usually registered automatically – still check that the e-card arrives.
  • With a low household income, exemption from the additional contribution may be possible.

Frequently asked questions about Co-insurance

Does co-insurance cost anything?

It is free of charge for children. For partners, an additional contribution may apply – except, for example, in case of child-raising or caregiving. We clarify this together.

Can my unmarried partner also be co-insured?

Yes, under certain conditions, for example if you run a household together and look after children. We check with you whether this is possible in your case.

Until when are children co-insured?

Until their 18th birthday, and longer if they are in school or vocational training – proof must then be submitted.

We provide practical support with filling in and submitting forms based on the information you give us. We do not provide legal or tax advice and cannot guarantee approval – the decision is made by the responsible authority.
