What you should know
Parents are entitled to family allowance for their children – generally until their 18th birthday, and for longer under certain conditions if they are in training or at university. The child tax credit (Kinderabsetzbetrag) is paid together with the family allowance.
For children born in Austria, family allowance is often granted automatically (“without application”). In many other cases – for example after moving to Austria, when training begins or during reviews – an application or proof is required.
How we help you
- Checking whether an application is needed or the allowance is paid automatically
- Filling in the Beih 100 application or the online application via FinanzOnline
- Gathering school, training and university certificates
- Replying to review letters from the Finanzamt
- Applying for the increased family allowance in case of significant disability
The documents you need
Please bring the following documents, if you have them. If something is missing, we will find a solution together.
- The child's birth certificate
- Registration certificates (Meldezettel) of parents and child
- ID documents or residence permits
- Confirmation of school, apprenticeship or university enrolment (from age 18)
- Bank details (IBAN)
Good to know
- Family allowance can be claimed up to five years retrospectively.
- Do not leave review letters from the Finanzamt unanswered – otherwise payments may be stopped.

Frequently asked questions about Family allowance
Do I have to apply for family allowance after the birth?
For children born in Austria, the Finanzamt checks entitlement automatically in many cases. If not all details are available, you will receive a letter – we are then happy to help you with the application.
What should I do if my family allowance has been stopped?
Usually a piece of proof is missing, for example a confirmation of university enrolment or training. We look at the letter together and submit the missing documents.
One parent works abroad – what now?
In that case, a supplementary or differential payment may be possible. Find out more on our page about the supplementary payment.
