What you should know

Childcare allowance (KBG) comes in two systems: as a flat-rate childcare allowance account with a flexible payment period, or as income-related childcare allowance for parents who were in employment before the birth. The choice of system is binding.

The application can be made on the day of birth at the earliest and applies retrospectively for a maximum of 182 days. Low-income families can additionally apply for a supplement (Beihilfe) to the flat-rate childcare allowance.
